Khadima fi ain aliassar
A maid in the eye of a cyclone
The events of the novel take place between autumn 2016 and spring 2017 in the neighborhoods of Algiers as well as in the prison of El Harrach and at the headquarters of the criminal court. Hoda is the heroine of this novel; a young woman in her twenties had been forced by the circumstances of her family to work as a maid for Mrs. Samira Sukari. The plot of the novel comes down to the case of the storming of Mrs. Samira Sukari's house to steal her jewelry and attempt to kill her. The protagonist, Suleiman Bou Rajla, has been arrested. He admitted that victim's maid Hoda Alem instigated him to steal her employer's jewelry to marry with their price, but Hoda denied the charge. She was arrested and placed in prison, and her case with her partner Suleiman was transferred to the criminal court.
Through these events, the novel presents the suffering of maids and housekeepers. It shows the problems they face, summed up by the contempt of society and the denial of their rights to social and medical insurance. In addition, they are exposed to harassment and accusations of theft when anything is lost in their workplaces.
The novel also presents an aspect of legal proceedings and the jury system in Algeria through the session of the criminal court to try the maid, Hoda. On this occasion, we ask the question of errors of justice. Criminal court judges and jurors are compelled to rule on their convictions when there is no compelling evidence of guilt. Since they are human beings, they can be right or wrong, so their convictions are affected by many factors related to their education, past experiences and prejudices. Consequently, it is unfair that the decisions of the criminal court are final and not subject to appeal, as they deny the innocent and the oppressed the opportunity to correct errors of justice.
It should be noted that the law of criminal procedure was amended by law n ° 07/17 of March 27, 2017, which allowed the appeal of judgments rendered by the criminal court.
The novel tackles other related topics without delving into them, such as child labor and female illiteracy.
